DIY Astrology Wall Art: Make Your Own Zodiac Constellation Art

My original plan was to make her natal chart. But, as often happens when I start researching a project, one idea led to another. While looking into natal charts, I came across zodiac constellations and immediately thought, Oh, wouldn’t that be fun to make?

Then I remembered seeing a beautiful galaxy watercolor painting on Instagram not long before, and suddenly everything clicked:

I could paint a watercolor galaxy and add her zodiac constellation to it!

And that’s how this DIY astrology wall art project began.

I did end up making a few changes to my other Astrology Wall Art pieces after I made this first one (I left of birthdates and added more zodiac sign characteristics), but the concept is the same.

From One Zodiac Art Idea to an Entire Collection

Of course, I couldn’t stop at just the watercolor galaxy.

As I started gathering supplies, more and more ideas came to me. I wanted the finished piece to feel less like simple constellation art and more like a little portrait of the person through astrology.

The center of each piece features a hand-painted galaxy with the corresponding zodiac constellation drawn over it. I added metallic gold accents to give the artwork a celestial feel and then included the zodiac sign’s name and some of its associated personality traits underneath.

By the time everything came together, I had created the framed astrology art you see here.

And because I had to wait for some of my supplies to be ready for pickup (this project was originally created during lockdown), I had plenty of time to experiment. Instead of making only one watercolor galaxy, I ended up painting several!

Naturally, that meant I had to turn them into more zodiac art.

Personalize Your Astrology Wall Art

One of my favorite things about this project is how easy it is to personalize.

You can certainly make the artwork using only someone’s zodiac sun sign and constellation, but you can also incorporate other details from their birth chart to make the finished piece even more meaningful.

For my Scorpio piece, I placed the gold cardstock slightly off-center behind the watercolor circle so it resembles a waning gibbous moon. While researching natal charts, I discovered that this was the moon phase I was born under.

I loved the way that little detail turned out!

It gives the artwork another layer of meaning that isn’t necessarily obvious to everyone who looks at it, but I know it’s there. That’s part of what makes personalized astrology art so much fun.

I only wish I’d thought of the birth moon phase idea before making my mom’s!

Ideas for Personalizing Your Zodiac Wall Art

There are so many ways you could make this project your own. Depending on how detailed you want to get, consider incorporating:

• Your zodiac sun sign
• Your zodiac constellation
• Your birth moon phase
• Your zodiac sign’s personality traits
• Your birth date
• Your ruling planet
• Your zodiac element
• Your zodiac symbol or glyph
• Your birthstone
• Your favorite celestial colors
• Your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs

You could even create three coordinating pieces representing your Big Three (Sun, Moon, and Rising signs), for a larger astrology gallery wall.

For a simpler version, stick with the constellation, zodiac name, and a few keywords that represent the sign.

Choosing Colors for Your Galaxy Watercolor Art

Don’t feel like your galaxy has to look scientifically accurate. That’s part of the fun!

I used blues, purples, and other dreamy galaxy-inspired shades, but you could choose colors based on the zodiac sign’s element or simply use the recipient’s favorite colors.

Fire signs could feature warm reds, oranges, pinks, and golds. Earth signs would look beautiful in greens, earthy neutrals, and rich jewel tones. Air signs could use pale blues, lavender, yellow, and airy pastels, while Water signs are perfect for deep blues, turquoise, violet, and silvery shades.

Or ignore all of that and paint whatever galaxy makes you happy!

The watercolor portion is meant to be creative and imperfect. Different colors blending together are what give each piece its own personality.

More Than Just Zodiac Wall Decor

Although I originally created this as a birthday gift, DIY constellation art would make a meaningful handmade gift for so many occasions.

You could make one for a birthday, Mother’s Day, housewarming, anniversary, new baby, or simply because you want to create something personal for someone you love.

I created a family astrology wall, which is really fun (although we have two Scorpio’s in my house, so I only made 4).

Make one framed piece for each member of the family using their individual zodiac signs and hang them together as a collection. Because each watercolor galaxy is painted by hand, every piece will be slightly different while still coordinating with the others.

You can see that effect in my finished collection. Even though Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn each have their own colors and constellation, the matching circles, metallic gold details, labels, and frames tie everything together.

Astrology Meets Creativity

What I love most about this DIY astrology wall art project is that it combines two things I love: creativity and astrology.

Astrology can be incredibly detailed, but you don’t have to understand an entire natal chart to make something meaningful from it. Sometimes a person’s sun sign, constellation, or the moon phase they were born under is enough inspiration to create something that feels completely personal to them.

And if you’re already interested in astrology, this project gives you a perfect excuse to dig a little deeper into your own birth information.

You might even discover something new about yourself along the way; I certainly did when I learned about my birth moon phase!

Whether you’re creating a single zodiac constellation as a gift or an entire celestial gallery wall for your home, don’t worry about making every detail perfect. Let the watercolors blend, play with the placement of your stars, add the astrological details that mean something to you, and make the artwork completely your own.

After all, no two birth charts are exactly alike.

Your astrology art doesn’t have to be either.

Notes

• You will also need to download the Astrology Art PDF for the names and characteristics.
• A cutting machine is not needed, but it does make this project much easier!
• I painted the matboard used in this tutorial. I bought white, then used craft paint to make it black. Matboard can be purchased in many colors, including black though.
• The matboard featured in the Sagittarius Astrology Art Wall Hanging tutorial photos is choppy, this was due to needing a new blade in my Cricut and I didn’t notice until it was all cut out. Typically, it cuts nice smooth lines when set to the proper settings (check your machine suggestions).
  
  

Instructions

With watercolor paper and watercolor paints, create a galaxy painting (I do not have a tutorial for this, but there are several online). Basically I used watercolor paints and laid in a few layers of the sky colors, I set it aside for a few minutes so it could dry up a bit, and then splatter painted some “stars” onto the the sky with watered down white craft paint.

While the paint dries completely, prepare your matboard:
Start by cutting out an 11″ x 14″ piece with an exacto knife (if your matboard is not already precut to size).

Next cut out a 6″ diameter circle centered widthwise, approximately 1.75″ down from the top edge. Centered 0.75″ under the circle, cut out a 4.5″ x 1.75″ rectangle.

Finally, centered and beneath that rectangle, cut another rectangle 7″ x 1.75″, 0.75″ down from the top rectangle.
You can also use my template on Cricut Design Space if you have a Cricut cutting machine.

Next, cut your cardstock. This needs to be a bit smaller than the cuts on the matboard to frame the inside, so we will cut it in two separate pieces.

First, cut a 7.75″ x 6.5″ square piece of cardstock, then cut out a 5.5″ diameter circle, centered width-wise, approximately 0.5″ down from the top edge.

Then, cut an 8.5″ x 4.5″ rectangular piece of cardstock. Cut out a 4 5/8″ x 1.25″ rectangle, centered width-wise, approximately 0.5″ down from the top edge.

Finally, centered and beneath that rectangle, cut another rectangle 6.5″ x 1 1/8″, 1″ down from the top rectangle.
My template in Cricut Design Space does also include the cardstock mat.

Next, go to the Astrology Art Wall Hanging PDF and download your free copy. This file contains both the astrological sign names and descriptors, plus the constellations.

Print the pages needed, set aside the sign name and descriptors, and cut out the constellation portion. Once you have the constellation cut out, poke holes in the center of the stars. Poke small holes in the small stars and large holes in the large stars.
Take the galaxy painting, place it below the circle cutout on the matboard, and decide which part of the galaxy you want featured, then trace the circle to highlight that portion.

Now, center the constellation in the middle of your galaxy, and “trace” the “stars” onto your galaxy, by placing a pencil in the holes you poked and transferring them onto the galaxy. Make sure your constellation is facing the correct direction, and you are holding the paper securely in place as you draw the dots, so that they are forming the constellation. Also make sure to follow the size pattern; for small stars: make small dots and for large stars: make large dots.

Next you will grab a ruler and draw the lines to connect the stars as shown on the constellation print out.

Grab your cardstock frame pieces and tape them to the the backside of the matboard, so they create an inside liner to the cutouts.
Now tape your astrological sign and descriptors to the back of the cardstock/matboard, so they are perfectly lined up and centered in the rectangles.

Grab your white paint and a thin brush or a white paint pen and go over your pencil marks to make the constellation stand out; make the larger dots more prominent. Set aside and allow to dry.

Once the constellation is dry, place it in your frame and hang it on the wall!

Make it Written in the Stars

I absolutely love how these astrology art pieces turned out! What started as a simple birthday gift idea became such a fun way to combine creativity, astrology, and a little bit of personalization.

And remember—you don’t have to make yours exactly like mine. Change the galaxy colors, add your birth moon phase, incorporate your zodiac element, or create a whole collection featuring the Sun, Moon, and Rising signs in your birth chart. That’s the beauty of making your own astrology wall art: you can fill it with the little celestial details that make it uniquely yours.
