DIY Tarot Deck Wrap & Reading Mat | Easy Sewing Pattern

Looking for a handmade way to store and protect your favorite divination cards? This DIY Tarot Deck Wrap & Reading Mat is a beginner-friendly sewing project that gives you a card case and portable reading surface all in one!

The mat wraps around your deck to create a soft fabric tarot card case, then ties securely with a ribbon to keep everything together. When you’re ready to use your cards, simply untie the ribbon and unfold the wrap to create your own tarot reading mat.

It’s reversible, washable, and available in two sizes. The Small size is perfect for creating a Lenormand card case or mini tarot card case, while the Large size works beautifully as a tarot or oracle card case.

You can even add an optional layer of batting for a little extra padding and protection.

Whether you’re storing your cards at home or taking them along to your next reading party, this easy sewing pattern gives your favorite deck a cozy, personalized home that goes wherever you do.

A Tarot Card Case and Reading Mat in One

What makes this project a little different from a traditional tarot card case is that you don’t have to remove your deck from its case and then find something else to use as a reading surface.

The case is the reading surface!

Place your deck in the mat, wrap the fabric around the cards, and secure everything with the ribbon. Your deck now has a soft fabric case for storage or travel.

When it’s time for a reading, untie the ribbon, unwrap your cards, and lay the fabric flat.

Just like that, your tarot deck wrap becomes a tarot reading mat where you can shuffle, pull cards, and lay out your spread.

That makes this project especially useful if you like reading your cards away from home. Instead of placing them directly on an unfamiliar table, countertop, picnic table, or other surface, you can bring your own designated reading space along with your deck.

DIY Tarot Wrap Case and Travel Reading Mat

Two Sizes for Different Divination Card Decks

Not every card deck is the same size, so this sewing pattern includes two size options.

Small — Lenormand & Mini Tarot Decks

The Small Tarot Deck Wrap is designed for standard Lenormand decks and mini tarot decks.

If you’ve been searching for a DIY Lenormand card case, this size gives you a simple alternative to a traditional pouch or box while also providing a portable surface for Lenormand readings.

Because the mat unfolds completely, you’ll have a clean space for laying out your cards wherever you happen to be reading.

Large — Standard Tarot & Oracle Decks

The Large size is designed to fit standard tarot decks through standard oracle decks.

Use it as a DIY tarot card case, oracle card case, deck wrap, or portable reading mat.

Oracle decks can vary quite a bit in size, so it may be helpful to measure your particular deck and compare it with the finished measurements before you begin.

The same goes for unusually thick tarot decks or cards with nonstandard dimensions.

Make Your Tarot Deck Wrap Reversible

One of my favorite features of this project is that the finished Tarot Deck Wrap is completely reversible.

That means you get to choose not one, but two fabrics!

Choose coordinating fabrics for a polished look, pair a bold mystical print with a quieter solid or blender, or choose two completely different designs when you can’t decide which one you love more.

Think:

  • Moons and stars
  • Crystals and botanicals
  • Suns and celestial prints
  • Mushrooms and woodland designs
  • Florals
  • Zodiac or astrology prints
  • Vintage-inspired fabrics
  • Light and dark coordinating prints
  • Colors that complement your favorite deck

You could even choose your fabrics specifically for the cards that will live inside.

A vintage-inspired fabric could make a beautiful Lenormand deck case, while a celestial print might be perfect for your favorite tarot cards. Choose something dreamy and colorful for an oracle deck, or simply pick two fabrics that make you happy.

Your handmade deck case can be just as unique as the cards inside it.

Reversible Tarot Mat

Add Batting for a Padded Tarot Card Case

Want a little more cushion around your cards?

The pattern includes the option to add a layer of batting to create a padded tarot card case.

Batting adds thickness and structure to the finished wrap while providing an extra layer of padding around your deck. This can be especially useful if you plan to carry your cards in a purse, tote bag, backpack, or suitcase.

It also creates a slightly more cushioned reading surface when the wrap is opened.

If you’d rather have a thinner, more flexible fabric tarot card case, simply leave the batting out.

Both versions work the same way, so the choice comes down to your personal preference and how you plan to use your wrap.

A Travel-Friendly Tarot & Oracle Card Case

One of the biggest reasons I love this design is how easy it makes traveling with divination cards.

Normally, you might bring your tarot or oracle deck in a box, pouch, or case and then pack a separate reading cloth or mat.

With this project, your card case and reading mat are the same thing.

Wrap up your deck, tie the ribbon, tuck it into your bag, and go.

When you’re ready for a reading, you already have everything you need to create a dedicated space for your cards.

It’s perfect for:

  • Readings with friends and family
  • Tarot meetups
  • Classes and workshops
  • Vacations
  • Weekend trips
  • Outdoor readings
  • Coffee shop card pulls
  • Taking a deck to work
  • Bringing cards to spiritual gatherings
  • Keeping a daily-pull deck in your bag

And because the wrap is fabric, it folds around your particular deck rather than requiring a rigid case.

A Washable Reading Mat

Since your deck wrap also becomes the surface where you lay your cards, being able to clean it is a definite bonus.

Your finished Tarot Deck Wrap & Reading Mat can be fully washable depending on the materials you choose.

If washability is important to you, choose washable fabric, batting, ribbon, and any other materials or embellishments you add.

I also recommend prewashing your fabric before sewing if you intend to wash the finished wrap. This can help prevent unexpected shrinking later.

Always follow the care instructions for the specific materials you’ve chosen.

Beginner-Friendly Tarot Sewing Project

You don’t need to be an experienced sewist to make your own tarot accessories!

This is an easy, beginner-friendly sewing pattern designed to create something that’s both beautiful and genuinely useful. It’s so easy, you could even sew them by hand!

It’s also a great project for using fabrics already in your stash. You may only need to go digging through your fabric collection to find two prints that were destined to become your new tarot deck case.

And once you’ve made one, you might find yourself wanting to make one for every deck you own!

Oracle Card Case and Reading Mat

Make a DIY Oracle Card Case

Although I’m calling this project a Tarot Deck Wrap & Reading Mat, it isn’t just for tarot cards.

The Large size makes a wonderful DIY oracle card case, too.

Since the wrap opens into a reading surface, it’s particularly useful for oracle decks you like to take with you for daily pulls, journaling, meditation, or intuitive readings.

Choose fabrics that coordinate with your favorite oracle deck and you’ve created a personalized case specifically for those cards.

Make a DIY Lenormand Card Case

Lenormand readers haven’t been forgotten!

The Small size is designed with standard Lenormand cards in mind, making this project an easy DIY Lenormand card case as well.

The smaller wrap gives your deck a cozy fabric home for storage and travel, while still unfolding into a surface where you can lay out your cards.

It’s also a fun way to coordinate your Lenormand deck with fabrics that match its particular style, from traditional and vintage to botanical, whimsical, or modern.

Handmade Card Wraps Make Great Gifts

If you have another card reader in your life, a handmade deck wrap also makes a thoughtful gift.

Make a tarot card case, oracle card case, or Lenormand card case using fabrics inspired by their personality, favorite colors, zodiac sign, spiritual practice, or favorite deck.

You could even pair the finished wrap with a new deck for someone who’s just beginning to explore divination.

Add a tarot journal, crystals, or a few other reading accessories and you’ve got the beginnings of a beautiful handmade gift set.

Ready to Sew Your Tarot Deck Wrap & Reading Mat?

Our decks can become incredibly personal tools, so I love the idea of giving them a handmade home that’s personal, too.

With two sizes, a reversible design, optional padding, ribbon closure, and endless fabric combinations, you can customize your wrap for the cards you love most.

Use the Small size as a Lenormand card case or mini tarot case, or make the Large size for your standard tarot or oracle cards.

Then, whenever you’re ready for a reading, untie the ribbon and unfold your case into a mat that gives you your own reading space wherever you happen to be.

So choose two fabrics that speak to you, grab your favorite deck, and let’s get sewing!

Tarot Wrap Reading Mat Fabric Cutting

Sewing

Iron fabric as needed.

Lay fabric right sides together and pin/clip in place along one half. If adding a layer of batting, put this on the bottom before clipping layers together.

DIY Tarot Card Mat Tutorial

Fold back the top layer of fabric towards the clips, find the center point on one short edge, and place the ribbon. I like to use a little glue stick to hold the ribbon in place.

DIY Oracle Card Wrap Reading Mat

Fold the top fabric back over flat and clip the other side into place to prevent layers from shifting while sewing.

Starting at the opposite end of the ribbon attachment: Sew ⅓ of the bottom, stitch down the side, across the top (backstitching over the ribbon for extra security), down the opposite side, then stitch ⅓ of the bottom, leaving the remaining ⅓ in the middle open.

Snip each of the four corners, diagonally above the point of the stitches, being careful not to cut the thread.

Turn fabrics so right sides are facing out (pulling the ribbon to the outside as well).

Use bobby pin or preferred tool to press into the inside of the corners to make them “pointy”.

At the bottom opening, fold over the fabric towards the inside of the project, so the seamline is even.

Iron project, paying close attention to the opening, so it stays tucked in.

Take it back to the sewing maching and top stitch ⅛-¼” around the outside. I started and stopped over the ribbon to give extra security.
