For this comparison, I have used these decks: The Golden Girls Tarot, Everyday Witch Tarot, Crystal Visions Tarot, and The Housewives Tarot.
The Devil card is all about temptation. It’s about desiring things that are not good for us, or making choices and decisions that are against our best interests.
The Devil card comes up when we are either being tempted or will be tempted in the future to go against what’s right for us. We may be tempted to overindulge in food, have an affair, tell a big lie… whatever it may be, it will be harmful to us in the long run.
This card can also represent holding on to something when it’s time to let go. Crappy relationship? Time to let go. Stressful job? Time to move on. Poor eating habits? Time to get healthy.
The Devil card may seem daunting, but it’s really a great reminder to take care of ourselves and look out for traps into unhealthy decisions.
It’s important to remember that The Devil isn’t an outside force, rather a choice that lies within us. We make the choices to do bad things, so we can also make the choice to do the right thing, which is fantastic news.
But how do we get this definition from these images?
In The Golden Girls Tarot you see Blanche holding her beloved cheesecake, wearing devil horns, and showing a little shoulder. And if you know anything about The Golden Girls, you know Blanche is the epitome of temptation! (This is actually my favorite card from the whole deck).
In The Housewives Tarot, you see a “sexy” “Devil’s Food” chocolate cake front and center, holding a martini, and surrounded by all your typical vices: cigarettes, coffee, medications, and bad processed foods. You know these are quick and easy measures for dealing with everyday stressors, but in the end they will catch up with you with nasty consequences.
You see the same sort of theme in the Everyday Witch Tarot: a devil over the shoulders tempting them with ice cream and money.
And of course we see the ultimate “temptation” in the Crystal Visions Tarot with the nod to Eve and her apples (while the devil sits in the background waiting for her to bite).
